Shillong Teer is a local game played at Khasi Hills Archery Sports Institute which involves shooting of arrows by around 30-50 shooters at one target. Once the total arrows are shot at the target, they will be counted and the last two digits will be declared as the result of the day. For example, if 1020 arrows hit the target, 20 will be declared as the result. There are 2 rounds of shooting per day, except Sunday. 1st Round (FR) starts at 3:30 PM and ends at 3:45 PM by which the result is declared e.g. 20. The 2nd Round (SR) starts at 4:30 PM and ends by 4:45 PM and the 2nd result is declared.
Teer is a legal game governed by the Meghalaya Amusement and Betting Tax (Amendment) Act, 1982. The winner is not decided through a lucky draw of ticket numbers, instead, by the number of ‘Teers’ (arrows) that hit the target. According to the local government, an estimated 5,000 Teer Counters/bookies are operating in Meghalaya with an estimated 1,500 counters in Shillong. A gambler can place a bet of 1 rupee up to 500 rupees for a chance of winning up to 80 rupees for each rupee. The game is organized by Khasi Hills Archery Sports Association, a group of 12 clubs from Assam locality, at Themmarwet near Khanapara, Ri Bhoi district, Meghalaya.
